Sometimes just being in the right place at the time with your camera ready really pays off. This was one of those times.
I had a relatively new Nikon D5000 (2 months old at the time, I think?) that I had no idea how to really work, apart from hitting the shutter. But sometimes that’s the only thing you need to do right to make a great photo.
With 10 more years of photography under my belt since I captured this moment, I see really obvious things I probably wouldn’t do today if in the same place and position with the camera. But I’m writing about this photo because it’s one of my top 5 favorites, and I think it’s not hard to see why.
The expression on my niece’s face says it all about how frustrating it is to have your dreams dashed by your older brother who has once again thoughtlessly pre-empted his little sister’s intention and hopes. This one moment of angst represents a lifetime of pecking order blues as the younger sister.
When I downloaded the photos from this evening, I nearly fell off my chair, I couldn’t believe how fantastic it was. No, of course not that my little niece was upset, that was a big drag for her at the time.
It’s fantastic and I love the photo because this completely unique moment -specific to this time, this place, these humans – could express a frustration, a disappointment – feelings that are universal.
